Compact fuel bunker retrofit solution for existing plants

Compact existing plants often use spring-blade or agitator bunkers that do not ensure reliable fuel discharge under real operating conditions. Bridging, uneven feeding and extensive manual intervention are typical consequences.

The CSB – Compact Sliding Bunker was developed as an industrial-grade replacement solution specifically for this application.

Typical problems in existing plants

  • Bridging above the discharge opening
  • Plant stoppage despite the mechanism running
  • Uneven fuel supply
  • High maintenance requirements and manual intervention

The cause is usually not the operation itself, but the discharge principle of conventional agitator systems: they move the fuel without actively conveying it to the outlet.

The solution: a moving floor instead of an agitator

The CSB replaces the agitator principle with a hydraulically driven moving floor and a clearly defined discharge sequence.

Advantages:

  • Controlled, even discharge
  • No bridging
  • Reliable continuous operation
  • Suitable for heterogeneous biomass containing fibres

Fuel is actively and precisely conveyed to the discharge point, regardless of particle size or moisture content.

Compact design for retrofit applications

The hydraulic drive is mounted on the side, so no extra length is required in the conveying direction.
This allows the system to be installed even in very confined existing plant spaces.

✔ compact design
✔ no axial extension
✔ ideal for retrofit applications

Discharge and conveying technology

Fuel is transferred by an open trough screw conveyor designed specifically for fibrous biomass.

  • Robust, open design
  • Reliable fuel transfer from the moving floor
  • Easy to maintain
  • Safe onward conveying toward the burner

🔧 Technical data (typical configuration)

The system is designed for each specific project. The following figures indicate a typical configuration.

  • Discharge principle:
    Hydraulic moving floor
  • Moving-floor drive power:
Approx. 5.0 kW (hydraulic power pack)
  • Hydraulic system:
    Approx. 90-litre tank
    HLP 46 hydraulic oil
  • Discharge screw conveyor:
    Open trough screw conveyor
  • Fuel:
    Wood chips and fibrous biomass
  • Application:
Existing plants, retrofit projects and confined installation spaces

Integration into the overall plant

BOILER AND BURNER CONNECTION
New trough screw conveyor / transfer to the burner or boiler

The CSB is engineered as a complete system solution. For each project, the conveying equipment is adapted to the existing boiler and burner technology to provide safe, continuous fuel supply to the combustion chamber.

Engineering and project planning

The CSB is engineered around the actual conditions at the existing site. Where required, a 3D laser scan of the existing installation provides the basis for detailed design and engineering.

Scope of work may include:

  • Site analysis and concept development
  • Mechanical design
  • Interface coordination
  • Manufacturing and installation documentation
Combination of a 3D laser scan and CAD model for planning the CSB Compact Sliding Bunker in an existing plant
Planning based on 3D laser scanning and CAD reconstruction

Conclusion

The CSB – Compact Sliding Bunker is an industrial-grade alternative to unreliable agitator-based discharge systems. Developed in response to real operating problems, it is designed for reliable continuous operation in existing plants.

When agitator systems fail to deliver, this is where the solution begins.

Background and project development

The CSB originated from a specific operational problem at an existing biomass plant. Its development, design decisions and implementation—from the original plant through to the completed solution—are documented in the accompanying project story.
